The Federal Reserve lowered its target rate in December, but updated projections suggested officials expected fewer cuts ahead than markets had hoped. The meeting showed why a cut can occur alongside a more cautious overall message.
Direction and destination are different
A quarter-point move describes one step. The projected endpoint and speed influence longer-term borrowing costs.
Markets can therefore react negatively even when the Fed cuts.
Inflation progress was incomplete
Officials had seen enough improvement to ease from earlier restrictive levels, but not enough to declare the job finished.
A slower path preserved room to respond to new price data.
Borrowers still needed patience
Credit card rates remained high, and mortgage rates depended on longer-term markets. Waiting for policy alone was not a debt strategy.
Extra principal payments delivered a certain return equal to the interest avoided.
