The Economy Grew 2.3% at the End of 2024. Consumers Did Much of the Work

By Ethan ChenJanuary 31, 20255 min read

The advance estimate showed real GDP growing at a 2.3 percent annual rate in the fourth quarter of 2024. Consumer spending was a central contributor, extending a pattern in which households kept the economy moving despite high borrowing costs.

Consumption is powerful

Household purchases make up a large share of the economy. Small changes in spending behavior can have a large effect on national growth.

The source of that spending still matters: income growth is more sustainable than rising revolving debt.

A decent headline can contain weak spots

Business investment, housing, inventories, and trade do not always move with consumers. Reading the contribution table shows whether growth is broad.

A concentrated expansion may be more vulnerable to a shock.

GDP is backward-looking

The release described a quarter that had already ended. Markets immediately turned to jobs, inflation, and company guidance for clues about 2025.

Economic data are a rearview mirror with improving resolution.
