An HSA Is a Medical Account With Unusual Long-Term Tax Benefits

By Lena BrooksAugust 14, 20255 min read

A health savings account belongs to the individual and can move across jobs. Eligibility generally requires coverage under a qualifying high-deductible health plan and no disqualifying coverage.

The account is portable

Unlike many flexible spending arrangements, unused HSA money can remain in the account from year to year. The balance is not tied to one employer.

That makes the account useful for current bills or future medical costs.

Receipts can preserve options

Qualified medical expenses can support tax-free distributions under the rules. Saving receipts creates a record if reimbursement happens later.

Clear documentation matters more as time passes.

Eligibility comes first

Contribution limits, coverage dates, Medicare enrollment, and other insurance can affect how much is allowed. An account being available on a website does not prove eligibility.

Check the current IRS guidance before contributing.
