Your Landlord's Insurance Usually Does Not Cover Your Stuff

By Ava ThompsonMarch 10, 20265 min read

A building owner's policy generally covers the structure and the owner's risks. It does not automatically replace a tenant's laptop, clothes, furniture, or other belongings after a covered loss.

Three protections often travel together

A renters policy commonly includes personal property, additional living expenses, and liability coverage. Limits and exclusions differ.

A cheap policy can still be inadequate if the limits do not match the household.

Replacement cost is not cash value

Replacement-cost coverage generally looks at the cost to replace an item, while actual cash value accounts for depreciation. The premium and claim outcome can differ.

Make the future claim easier

Photograph rooms, record serial numbers for expensive items, and keep receipts in cloud storage. A basic inventory is more useful than relying on memory after a loss.

Insurance works best when the documentation exists before it is needed.
