Interest can accrue while a student loan is not being fully paid. In certain situations allowed by the loan terms and federal rules, that unpaid interest may be added to principal. Future interest is then calculated on a larger balance.
Accrual and capitalization are separate
Accrual means interest is accumulating. Capitalization is the event that adds eligible unpaid interest to principal.
The timing depends on the loan type and repayment status.
The dashboard balance needs context
A balance can grow even when no new money is borrowed. Reviewing the transaction history can show how much is principal and how much is unpaid interest.
Loan servicers should provide the applicable terms.
Small payments can still have a purpose
When permitted and affordable, paying accruing interest can reduce the amount available to capitalize. That choice should not come ahead of rent, food, or an essential emergency buffer.
